  • Open-Air Museum in Vysoký Chlumec 49.617657, 14.389767

    The open-air museum of rural structures in the central area of the Vltava River basin in Vysoký Chlumec was opened in 1999. The museum presents folk architecture and its development from the 18th to the 20th centuries. Dwelling houses, farm houses and technical facilities such as water sawmill as well as items which served as part of the equipment of rural houses and granges, have been gradually transferred to the area of the museum.

    “Toulcův dvůr ” is an area of historic listed buildings situated in Prague-Hostivař. The area was chosen as an example of preservation of a medieval architecture through sensitive renovation. Since 1994, the structure has been gradually restored and serves as a centre of environmental education for the city of Prague.

    Volunteers coordinated by the Slovene Ethnological Society, the Ethnographic collection Palčeva šisa and the Museum of Ribnica arranged an exhibition in the old barn in the Trava village. This was done upon the request of Marta Steiner, who decided to name the collection after an old house name Pr’ Mnčknih.

  • Grondali – A Revitalized Homestead with a Winery in Slovenian Istria 45.548059, 13.730188

    Abitanti, typical village in Slovenian Istria hinterland, bordering Croatia, was abandoned for twenty years. Many houses stood empty for fifty years or more. The inhabitants were left to live and work in Slovenian or Italian coastal towns or migrated to foreign countries. Traditional homestead of Grondali in the middle of the settlement was the first to be revitalised: farm buildings and yards were reconstructed, traditional viniculture reintroduced and supporting activities for sustainable agro-tourism were defined.

  • Wooden Houses with Traditional Ornamental Painting in Čičmany 48.955830, 18.516571

    Traditional timber houses in Čičmany are famous for their ornamental decorations. The ornaments are inspired by the local embroidery tradition. Owners of private houses preserve the objects in their original state and maintain the spirit and a representative symbol of the village. In 2013, the Čičmany ornament was inscribed on the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Slovakia. Selected ornaments were used for the design of the dresses of the Slovak Olympic team (London 2012, Sochi 2014).

    Gyűrűfű Foundation (www.gyurufu.hu) is an independent environmental organisation focusing its activity on the local watershed situated in the southern hills of Zselic. The foundation was registered in 1991, and has no affiliation to any of the political parties or business enterprises except those established by the eco-villagers. The mission of the organisation is to develop a well-founded, realistic and feasible small scale model of human subsistence with an emphasis on environmental and ecological considerations, taking rural areas, hamlets, villages and agricultural farms as the first priority.

    The building stands on the site of a former mill, which was built in 1540. In the 1860s, the mill ceased to be used for its purposes and was rebuilt in the so called Egerland style into a building, with a popular restaurant mainly offering regional dishes. In 2004 the building was sensitively reconstructed in accordance with the regional architectural style.

    Mushrooms (Fungus) are organisms earlier categorized among plants, valued like food. Mushrooms have a numerous distribution, mainly in forests or in places with some trees. In mushrooms we cane find some minerals, vitamins, but caloric value is low. Mushrooms were important part of traditional kitchen and still is pick mushrooms very popular in the Central and East Europe. Mushrooms like food are divided into three groups – edibles (bay bolete), inedibles (bitter bolete) and poisonous (fly agaric).

  • Juraj Jánošík Jánošíkova družina

    (baptized Jan 25 1688 in Varín – executed Mar 18 1713 in Liptovský Mikuláš) was a legendary Slovak thief, who later became a part of folklore. In years 1707 and 1708 he took part in the uprising of Francis II. Rákoczi, later became a member of an imperial army. In 1710 he begins to brigand in the band of Tomáš Uhorčík, in 1711 he becomes a leader of this band. He was executed by hanging by the left rib in 1713. During Romanticism Jánošík´s story was commonly used motif used by writers of the Slovak national movement. In the folk tradition, there is plenty of songs, legends (often with miriculous motif) and paintings on glass with depictions from the Jánošík legend. The most dominant message of the Jánošík tradition is an emphasis on social righteousness.
