Kasarna is a late Baroque building dating from the end of the 18th century. It is one of the oldest preserved examples of common workers’ flats in the country. Ironmaking families lived there until 1983. In 1985 it was listed as a cultural monument. Since then the Municipality of Jesenicewas renovating it under the authority of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage. Since 2005 the renovated Kasarna has been housing Music School Jesenice and Gornjesavski muzej Jesenice.

Kasarna

Since 2005 the building has been housing a permanent ethnological exhibition – Kasarna at Stara Sava – lifestyle of ironmaking families. Former residents provided photographs and objects. The exhibition is about the residential area of Stara Sava, the building itself, its flats and residents. It shows the significance of a workers’ residential area at Stara Sava.  The kitchen and the bedroom are a reconstruction of a worker’s flat in the 1930s and 1940s. During museum educational workshops we make worker’s coffee and get to know the life of ironmakers.
